I making this a main topic thread such that everyone will see it, and hopefully, all will contribute.

As of today, Jan. 9, 2015, we are banning the site imgbox.com for hosting photos and particularly GIFs. The reason being is that it has become a highly malicious site like others such as imagevenue, etc, wherein once a photo or GIF is clicked upon, your browser is immediately redirected to a number of porn sites. I'm also getting virus warning from my AVG anti-virus software when imgbox images are clicked upon.

We need our members to make recommendations of sites that offer *embedded* GIFs using BBcode. That is, when someone sees the post, they also see the GIF image - not just a link to somewhere. Please post any sites of which you know where are members can upload and embed GIFs safely. I'll amend this post as we learn of others, then add them to our safe hosting thread, here:

APPROVED VIDEO & PHOTO FILE SHARING HOSTS

The following posts all use the same .gif never altering its size.

1. imgur.com

What it looks like when embedded (the image is non-clickable w/ redirect, but instead, can be directly copied from the forum)

Image

2. dumparump.com

When you use dumparump, your animated .gif must be less than 2 MB. Once loaded, you will see a box "Hotlink a clickable thumbnail on a Forum or Message Board", which is how we traditionally embed photos in our posts using dumparump. Copying that URL hotlink will show an embedded image of the .gif, as follows:

Image

Unfortunately, dumparump prevents the actual animated gifs from being embedded in forums.

3. uploadedit.com

This is similar to imgur.com as it embeds the animated gif into the post, however, with this site you can click on the embed gif. There are two BB codes provided for use in forums - use the top one "Link for using image on forum (1)"
Image

4. Using a tumblr account:

Upload your gif to your tumblr account by clicking on the "photo" icon for uploading (it doesn't differentiate between .jpgs and .gifs). Click on "post". Once you see the animated .gif playing, if you have Firefox browser, you'll see "Copy Image Location", which you then click on. For Internet Explorer there's an added step - right click on the .gif, and in the menu box popup go to "Properties". You'll then see the URL address of the .gif printed out, which you must highlight and copy.

But before posting that link in your post, first click on the "img" icon in our forum above your posting window as shown here:

Image

You'll then see "img" enclosed in two sets of [brakets] - the first set of brackets does not have a forward slash in front, the second one does. Paste the copied URL of the .gif image location between the two brackets (note that your cursor is automatically positioned between the brackets - just click on paste or Control - V). This is what you'll see once posted:

Image

In fact, you can do the above for animated .gif posted on many Internet sites - just right click on that .gif on whatever web page it is shown then copy the image's url location. Put that link between the bracketed "img" boxes and it will appear embedded and animated within your post.

5. Photobucket

Like tumblr, Photobucket requires you to create a free account. Once created, you can upload your animated .gif. Like dumparump, Photobucket provides you the ability to copy the link in BB code for forums, which gives you this:

Image

It should be noted, however, than when post a .gif that is hosted on an account you've created in Photobucket, the user's name will show within the URL address indicating it came from your hosted library whereas dumparump keeps that information anonymous. Thus, when creating accounts on tublr and Photobucket, use names and emails that are not tied to you personally such that personal information is not conveyed.

I think the hunt for safe hosting sites for files, videos, gifs, pictures will be an ongoing one just as a side-effect of how the internet functions.

We, as well as other communities on the internet want safe filehosts. It goes like this:

1. People create safe filehosts.

2. We find out about them and stat to to use them.

3. Safe filehost sites start to attract a lot of hits.

4. Advertising companies notice the high traffic rates on the safe filehosts and offer them riches beyond their wildest dreams.

5. Safe filehosts become unsafe filehosts and get put on the "banned" list.

6. We go back to looking for another safe filehost.

7. Go back to step 1 and go around again as often as necessary.

Cheers

Doug

Agreed. But that's why this must be a community effort. Everyone on this site uses various hosting site - it's time for the members that don't contribute to pitch in and help. After all, many benefit from the volunteer efforts of a few...

Quite right Brad, Dont get me wrong, I understand the need and agree it is best to be an all-community effort. I guess that I was trying to point out that it will be ongoing and we should be constantly searching for new safe hosts. It is not something we should find surprising when it happens and we should be ready with the next one before we need it.

Cheers

EDIT: Nevermind, I made not one but 2 newb errors . 1) the link in the browser bar on imgur is not the link you share, 2) you have to pick to have it formatted into bbcode. I'll take it from here 8-)

I was getting ready to post some gifs hosted on Imgur using the Img html, but when I loaded up a preview it showed them as the little x'ed out box. Can Imgur gifs no longer be embedded or do they just no appear in previews (or, did I just mess something else up)?

Imgur is still by far the best .gif hosting site. It can take *huge* .gif files.

Their format has changed, but yes, you can still hotlink the gif within a post such that the viewer doesn't have to click on links (and we HATE it when links are unnecessarily posted rather than hotlinks).

To hotlink the embedded gif on Imgur, do this:

1. Hover your cursor over the uploaded gif (this is a new thing)
2. You'll see drop down menu - go down the drop down menu and click on "Get share links"
3. Copy "BBcode (Forums)"

I just did that here:

We should all be alerted to the fact that neither Tumblr NOR Photobucket allow NSFW images to be uploaded onto their servers through their service.

AND ... since Photobucket commercialized and alienated most of their free account users ...
the ones who are still there will now find a watermarked image advertising the 'Bucket

( see Brad's post a few above yours Supe )

Most online sources are limited in that their end product has a small cap on file size, and support just a few formats.

Here's one I've used:

https://giphy.com/create/gifmaker

instructions:
https://support.giphy.com/hc/en-us/arti ... Make-A-GIF

The best option is to get a .gif app for your computer and convert yourself. The best site for hosting them is imgur.com as they allow large file sizes, and, will allow NSFW/mature content.
